Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarized and Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds. Polarizers do not affect the overall color balance of a shot. It is important that you choose the correct version of polarizer for your camera. Many of today's cameras use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to split the light entering the viewfinder in order to calculate exposure and focusing distance. Polarizing filters can sometimes interact with these items to give unpredictable exposure or focusing. So we recommend that you choose a circular polarizer unless you have a manual focus camera which has no beam splitter. If you will be using your Polarizing filter on a lens which has a focal length of 28mm or wider (on a 35mm camera), we recommend that you use a Wide Circular Polarizer to avoid a possible vignette effect. Wide filters are designed specifically for wide angle lenses, when using a Wide filter the standard lens cap that comes with your lens may not fit on the front of the filter.

fantastic filter

its a lot cheaper than the premium quality ones, and it does its job. it is very thin so there is no vignetting, but so thin that my lens cap pops off all the time when its on it. it is really essential to have a good polarizer, and this one is as good as any other.

Good, but not B+W good

Got this instead of paying a premium for a B+W filter. The Promaster Wide CPL 77mm is a very good filter for the money. It does it's job well; takes the reflection away from water or glass effectively, and allows for those deep blue skies. However, a strange thing I noticed on the filter glass when cleaning it. I held it up to the light and notice streaks on the glass, like a few water droplets that had run slowly along the glass. These are apparently permanent, it looks like some of the coating was allowed to run and dried like that. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to effect the quality. Another con is that it sometimes produces light halos where sky meets and edge such as a horizon. Also the skies come out even across the frame. It's partially to do with the lens used, a Canon EF-S 10-22mm, which has the usual peripheral illumination problems, but I had half expected a 77mm filter to compensate for the color differences and corner darkness.
