A Lack of Focus

The V3 version of this LCD loupe viewer sports a metal frame that screws onto the Canon tripod mount at the bottom of the camera (which means not having to use rubberbands or adhesive strips to attach it to the camera). It fits perfectly for the T3i and a little less perfectly for the T2i. Frankly, I want to love this thing given the novel tripod mount.The point of this loupe is to be able to view the LCD screen with ease during bright sunlight or during video and live view shooting.Sadly, the copy I received has some rather significant flaws. I understand some have gotten sharp and precise copies of this viewer, but mine was not. The two things that were amiss were:1) the tripod mounting frame was bent and warped upon arrival meaning the loupe will not attach securely via its magnets2) its fixed focus lens is misaligned by a great deal of distance resulting in a very much out-of-focus image of the LCD in the eyepiece making it impossible to manually focus a lens via the LCD screen (to obtain a genuinely sharp view of the LCD with the eyepiece you must detach and hold the entire loupe an additional 2 inches back away from the mounting frame!); this means viewing the LCD screen will always be blurry unless corrected.There are some nice qualities to this loupe. The tripod attachment is an excellent innovation. The build quality seems robust enough and the eyepiece lens is quite crisp (albeit misfocused). Most amazing is the generous size and softness of the rubber eye cup, which is comfortable even for those who wear glasses.I am debating with myself whether to return this or not. The bent frame can probably be corrected, but the badly out of focus eye piece lens cannot. Even so, I very much like the concept.---Updated 9/25/2012Yes, I decided to keep the loupe. I also decided to attempt to correct its focus flaw; so I deconstructed it and added a coupler with an extension tube. This had the net effect of not merely correcting its overall focus but I also customized its focus to compensate for my personal vision so that I may use it without wearing my reading glasses. It cost me about six in small change to buy the extra parts.Regarding the warped frame that was sent to me, it was easily bent back into shape. Now I have an LCD viewing loupe that not only fits my camera but is also perfectly adjusted to my vision. Having gone through the exercise once, I may just buy another and modify it the same way for my wife's use.I would say that if you are interested in tinkering with such things, you may benefit from buying this. If re-engineering such products is not to your taste then this loupe may not work well for you.Finally, if anyone is interested, I put together a very short video tutorial on how I fixed the focus issue to match my own eyesight.
