This allows the overall thickness of the filter to be reduced to avoid vignetting when used with ultra-wide angle lenses. It's a good filter. The raised ridge for the threads makes it easy to removed for cleaning. I have a polarizer on my Fuji without the ridge and I can't remove it!It may be expensive, but the quality is well worth the price.

52mm Circular Polarizing Multi-Coated Glass Pro 1 Digital Filter is a very good Circular Polarizer to start with. I'm using it very effectively with my Nikon 35mm f/1.8 and other 52mm threads.
